Social Communication Skills – Level A

This group-based program provides learners with opportunities to learn social communication skills needed to engage with peers and participate in group activities. Learners are placed in one of three levels based on their current skill level.

Level A – Early communication skills, social skills and play skills are contrived and taught within various group activities (e.g., crafts, turn taking games, science experiments, circle time activities).

Skills taught can include:

  • Social responding and initiation (e.g., returns greetings, approaches others)
  • Leisure activities and social play (e.g., engages in parallel play, requests from peers)
  • Group learning skills (e.g., participate in structured group activities, transitions between group activities)

Skills We Focus On

Social communication: greeting others, responding to and initiating simple interactions.

Play & leisure: engaging in parallel play, requesting from peers, and enjoying shared activities.

Group learning: participating in structured activities, transitioning between tasks, and following group routines.

This program is not suitable if your child:

Engages in behaviours that could cause injury to self or others

Needs consistent 1:1 support for learning

Does not speak using 1-2 words or does not use a communication device to express 1-2 words
